Lady Gaga's "Born This Way'"sells 1.1 million copies, in its first week

Lady Gaga's latest album made a big splash with fans and on sales charts.

"Born This Way" sold over 1.1 million copies in its first week, according to Billboard.com, to land in the No.1 spot on the album chart. The amount is no small feat as "Born This Way" is only the 17th album to sell over a million in its debut week since Nielsen SoundScan, the sales tracking system for music, began collecting data in 1991.

The record for first week sales in the SoundScan-era belongs to NSYNC, whose sophomore album "No Strings Attached" sold 2.4 million in its first week when it debuted in March 2000.

Late last week the album was on track to sell over a million in part, because of a special offer for Amazon.com, which sold "Born This Way" for 99 cents for two days this past week.

The Associated Press reported on Tuesday that the demand for Lady Gaga's album took a toll on Amazon's servers and some customers were unable to download the album.

Amazon's spokeswoman Sally Fouts told the wire service that Amazon experienced a high volume of traffic that caused delays for those downloading the album. "Born This Way" was only supposed to be on sale for 99 cents on the album's release date on May 23. However, because of the difficulties, Amazon made the album available for 99 cents again on May 26.

Lady Gaga, who was born Stefani Germanotta, was recently named No. 1 on the annual Forbes Celebrity 100 list, beating out Oprah Winfrey and Justin Bieber for the honor of the most powerful celebrity.
